Social Media Intern - Redwood City, CA

Care2.com is looking for a Social Media Intern to help us spread the word about the great work our nonprofit partners are doing on Care2, bring progressive, green people to Care2 to take action, and bring Care2 to people who care about making a difference - wherever they are online.

You are a strong writer, savvy about social networking, passionate about nonprofit issues, comfortable with HTML and web graphic production, and enjoy promoting progressive issues and engaging with an online community to market Care2’s nonprofit partners and petitions. You love to test out new social media tools and sites, are active on several social sites, and have lots of ideas for how to make the world a better place using the power of social media.

As Care2's Social Media Intern, you will:

  • Create and test campaigns to promote Care2 nonprofit petitions using social media and on social networks;
  • Evaluate new and upcoming social media tools and sites for potential use for promoting Care2 actions and content;
  • Monitor social media outlets to better understand how users are talking about and using Care2, and for which issues people are passionate about;
  • Communicate with Care2 activist petition authors about how they are using social media to promote petitions;
  • Blog on Care2 and potentially elsewhere about Care2 campaigns and progressive issues;
  • Write and promote Care2 success stories;
  • Have fun making the world a better place!

 

The Social Media Intern reports to the Manager of Activist Marketing, and works primarily with the Campaign Team Marketing staff.

 

Job Qualifications

 

  1. Strong writing and editing skills.
  2. Knowledge of social networks and social media tools including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, StumbleUpon, Digg and MySpace.
  3. Proficiency in HTML and web graphics production using Adobe Photoshop and/or ImageReady
  4. Knowledge of basic office programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  5. Enthusiasm for Care2’s nonprofit issues and campaigns.

 

The position is located in Redwood City, California. Dates and hours of the internship are flexible (minimum of 20 hours a week). This is a paid position at $10 per hour.

Care2 is Hiring an Online Campaigner

Care2 is hiring a new Online Campaigner to join our campaign team based in Redwood City, California.

The Online Campaigner will work with advocacy and fundraising professionals at leading nonprofits to craft successful online campaigns targeting Care2 Web visitors and e-newsletter subscribers. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, has solid analytical skills, is passionate about the environment and progressive causes, and is comfortable balancing competing deadlines and demands. This candidate is equally adept at creating persuasive editorial messages - often in response to fast-changing current events - and at analyzing and optimizing a campaign’s performance.

Job Responsibilities:

* Research, write, edit and test Care2 action alerts and newsletters, in consultation with teammates and Care2's nonprofit clients

* Launch and manage campaigns, then track, analyze and report results for Care2 and clients

* Effectively utilize different areas of Care2's Web site and social networking areas (e.g. Races, Care2Connect, E-Cards) to promote campaigns for Care2's nonprofit clients

* Interact with broad array of nonprofit clients

* Help manage Care2's inventory of email alerts, e-newsletters and Web site placements for maximum effectiveness

* Participate in achieving monthly campaign team revenue targets while providing strong value to Care2's nonprofit partners

* Achieve Care2 list growth targets by utilizing a wide range of digital marketing techniques.  A high value is placed on developing innovative techniques to recruit new members.

* Provide strong project participation and/or leadership within Care2, consistent with an upward career growth path

Qualifications

* Superb writing and speaking skills

* Knowledge of, or experience in, the nonprofit sector

* Excellent relationship-building, consulting and client management skills

* Self-starter, dynamic and able to thrive in an unstructured environment

* Excellent listening and communications skills to interact effectively with teammates, clients and others

* Strong work ethic and desire to work collaboratively

* An interest in, and passion for, progressive social issues and the environment

* Ability to work quickly under pressure and multi-task

* Excellent organizational skills and ability to help drive projects to completion

* Demonstrated skills in using Excel and/or in managing quantitative data

* Experience with social media and search engine marketing

* HTML and web graphics skills

* At least a college degree; Journalism, English, Political Science, International Relations preferred

* 1-3 years of relevant experience

Internship Description


This is a hands-on, interdisciplinary internship in a relaxed office environment that will give you a bird’s eye view of the nonprofit sector and enable you to hone valuable online communications and marketing skills. Qualified undergraduate and graduate students will have an interest in online marketing and social networking, and a background in Journalism, International Relations, International Development, Communications, Marketing, Sales, Business, Sociology, Psychology, English or Web Design. It's also good if you are interested in social entrepreneurship and causes. To some extent, Care2 will tailor the internship according to the skills you present, and to your interests, while focusing on activities that will help Care2 advance its mission and business success.

Past internships have involved:

• Writing and Content Development: Interns were trained in Content Management Systems (CMS) to update the website. They also helped brainstorm new topic ideas for Care2’s blog, Frogloop, that discusses online advocacy, member recruitment, and fundraising issues.

• Marketing and Communications: In order to create “viral” member growth, interns investigated ad placement opportunities, determined strategic search engine keywords, and created new e-cards and petitions. Interns also helped Care2 grow its nonprofit client base by assessing sponsorship and participation opportunities at nonprofit conferences and by conducting analysis to identify new nonprofit sectors that Care2 should explore.

• Competitive Analysis: Interns have profiled progressive blog sites and other online media outlets used by nonprofit groups for advocacy, list growth and fundraising.

• Research, etc.: Interns researched current events, wrote blog entries, interviewed nonprofit professionals and assisted in the creation of online surveys, podcasts, feature articles, MySpace type strategies and made recommendations to guide development of new “Web 2.0” services and identify process improvement opportunities.
