The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the nation’s premier public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights, seeks a full-time Grant Writer for its Development Department in New York City. Reporting to the Director of Foundation Relations, the Grant Writer provides writing and editorial support on an array of civil liberties issues, and assists in researching new foundation funding sources, for a well established, high-volume institutional fundraising program.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• In collaboration with the Director of Foundation Relations and ACLU program staff, create and implement fundraising strategies.
• Synthesize complex information into clear and concise grant proposals, reports, letters of inquiry, and stewardship materials.
• Adapt writing style to meet the interests of ACLU funders and to reflect the relationship of funders to organization.
• Manage stewardship of current donors in portfolio and cultivation of prospects.
• Conduct foundation and corporate research for new potential funders.
• Assist with the creation of grant budgets and budget reports.
• Monitor and manage time for portfolio according to deadlines.
• Undertake miscellaneous assignments at discretion of Director of Foundation Relations.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in development, communications, or journalism preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Outstanding writing skills, including ability to synthesize and communicate complex civil liberties issues clearly and concisely; ability to adapt writing style as necessary to communicate and foster relationships with ACLU funders and prospects.
• Must be detail oriented and have the ability to manage several complex writing projects simultaneously, often under strict deadline pressure.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work with staff at all levels, interact with donors, and represent the organization tactfully and diplomatically.
• Excellent prospect research skills, including using online databases and the Internet.
• Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.
• Commitment to the goals of the ACLU.
