Convio Online Marketing Nonprofit Benchmarks Released

LOLseals: Flickr API Contest Gets HSUS Over 3,000 Entries

lolseals Carie Lewis from HSUS tipped us to another clever Web 2.0 crowdsourcing contest by them that shows a great use of Flickr's API.

Carie and team used their Flickr Pro account (which your nonprofit can get for free here) and Flickr's API to create, in essence, a great lead-capturing tool that doubles as a cute baby seal photo gallery.

HSUS YouTube User-Generated Video Competition Grows List

carie_lewis_headshot.jpgBack in September, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) hosted a video competition on YouTube looking for submissions for an anti-dogfighting PSA.  After reviewing the user-generated content (UGC), two winners would emerge: one picked by HSUS and the other by members.

The competition drew 2,000 new members to their email list, provided HSUS a whole batch of new online videos to use, and garnered over 95,000 views of the winning clip.

The price of hosting the competition?  Almost free. 

Carie Lewis, internet marketing manager at HSUS, explains how the nonprofit organization pitched the low cost campaign and shares advice to other nonprofits looking to do the same.

Props to MyEmma for Doing Good

emma_logo3.gifWe just wanted to give some recognition to MyEmma, the email marketing and communications firm, for the good they're doing for nonprofits and the world. 

Annually, MyEmma gives away 25 free accounts to deserving nonprofits nominated by users.  While the nomination is currently closed for this year, make sure to look out for when they're re-opened. No doubt, this will be announced on their blog.

Additionally, they plant 5 trees for every new account they bring in, which totalled 1,700 freshly-planted trees in January.

While we haven't personally tried their email service, we congratulate them on doing some good for this world.

MyEmma isn't the only for-profit company in the nonprofit sector pitching-in to make the planet a better place (ahem, Care2), but we're going to start highlighting a few other companies that are doing their part (especially when your nonprofit can get free stuff).

How They Did It: LWB Wins Facebook Causes Giving Challenge

anhui.JPGThe Facebook Causes Giving Challenge recently crowned its champions of social network fundraising -- Love Without Boundaries Foundation, a more-than-deserving nonprofit specializing in medical care, education, foster care, and nutrition for orphaned children in China.  Their Causes page garnered over $94,000 from 6,268 members in 50 days.  

How did they do it?  Get ready to throw out the book on promoting Facebook Causes.  From teaching supporters how to create Facebook accounts to ol' fashioned door-to-door fundraising, Amy Eldridge from LWB, an admitted Facebook newbie, says it's as much the offline as the online work that gets the job done.
