How Diverse are Social Networks?

 Out of the top five websites ranked by U.S. traffic it’s social networks networks like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter that dominate, according to Quantcast, one of the biggest analytics companies for measuring websites. So how diverse are the audiences on some of the most trafficked websites in the U.S.?

 

  • Women dominate on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. The gender demographics equal out on YouTube and LinkedIn.
  • The most diverse social network is YouTube. 45% of the audience is either African America, Hispanic, Asian or other.
  • LinkedIn has the oldest demographics. 32% of their audience is 50+.

Facebook:

Facebook has over 800 million users worldwide according to Facebook, but their monthly U.S. traffic is about 143 million according to Quantcast. While that is quite a difference in numbers, they are still ranked as the second most popular visited site in the U.S.

Gender:  55% female, 45% male

Age: 27% are under 18. 42% are 18-34. 20% are 35-49. 12% are 50+.

Ethnicity: 75% are Caucasian. 13% are African American. 5% are Asian.  6% Hispanic. 1% are Other

 

YouTube:

YouTube has approximately 500 million users according to Fast Company and 145 million website visitors monthly in the U.S. They are the third most popular visited site in the U.S.

Gender: 50% Male, 50% Female

Age: 26% are under 18. 36% are 18-34. 22% are 35-49. 16% are 50+

Ethnicity: 65% are Caucasian. 13% are African American. 7% are Asian. 14% are Hispanic. 1% are Other. 

 

Twitter:

Twitter has over 200 million users according to ReadWriteWeb. Their monthly blog traffic is about 68.8M and is ranked as the fifth most popular website in the U.S.

Gender: 45% Male, 55% Female

Age: 18% are under 18. 45% are 18-34. 24% are 35-49 and 14% are 50+

Ethnicity: 69% are Caucasian 16% are African American. 3% are Asian 11% are Hispanic. 1% are Other.

 

LinkedIn:

LinkedIn has 120 million members according to LinkedIn and about 4.5 million website U.S. visitors. They are the 22nd most visited site in the U.S.

Gender: 51% Male, 49% Female 4%

Age: 4% are under 18.  26% are 18-34. 38% are 35-49. 32% are 50+

Ethnicity: 83% are Caucasian. 5% are African American. 7% are Asian 4% are Hispanic. 1% are Other.

The statistics for Twitter don't match the most recent Pew Internet research results that said Latinos were the leading demographic for people of color on Twitter.
