Mapping Your Nonprofit: An Intro to GIS

As a co-organizer of NetSquared DC, I helped design a presentation on the topic of GIS and mapping technology as applied to nonprofits. The speaker, Robert Cheetham, is both concise and knowledgeable, but more importantly he has a knack for explaining GIS in a way that is very accessible to non-techies. His firm, Avencia, is an award winning GIS consultancy.

I'm a big fan of GIS and other forms of visual communications. Vist the Program Locator section of the Tutor/Mentor Connection at http://www.tutormentorprogramlocator.net/programlocator/default.asp and you can see examples of how maps can be used to focus volunteers and donors on all of the neighborhoods of a city that need a particular non profit service.

With such a resource, it's possible to get more programs and non profits to work together to increase resources for everyone in this sector, instead of just competing with each other for a shrinking or limited pool of resources.
